Memorizing Korea's Tragic May: 5.18 Democratization Movement

I read a book, which was recommended by RM from BTS, whom I greatly admire. When I first picked up this novel, recommended by a friend, I knew it would be no ordinary read. As I flipped through the pages, I felt a mixture of anticipation and hesitation. It was a profound and challenging narrative, one that compelled me to write this heartfelt review.   This book is about  This remarkable book delves into the events of the 5.18 Democratization Movement, shedding light on a significant period in history. Every word, every sentence evoked a sense of pain and anguish. It is not a book to be read casually, but one that demands to be embraced fully. The events of May 18, 1980, unfolded when students gathered at the main gate of Jeonnam National University in Gwang-ju, Korea. On May 27, 1980, martial law troops indiscriminately attacked the citizens gathered at Jeonnam Provincial Office, bringing a tragic end to the situation. Over the course of ten days, the official casualties numbered

What I Do for a Living: K-pops

In Korea, I work for a company that makes educational programs to learn Korean using K-contents. I am working on discovering video contents such as K-pops and K-dramas and planning educational programs using them. The best thing about doing this is that I'm always listening to the latest k-pops!

BTS' Suga catches my eyes these days

I enjoy listening to various artists and songs that come out from time to time, but I can't help but talk about BTS. Among them, can I just take a moment to appreciate Suga's style these days? Lately, he's been rocking with this natural long hairdo. It matches well with his white face, giving a sophisticated and luxurious vibe. Literally, his Hemeco – hair, makeup, coordination or styling - feels like a properly advanced artist. Cool, Min Yunki!

Suga X AgustD

As a member of BTS, Suga delivers messages of hope and dreams to young people, but as AgustD, he transforms into this rough and rebellious rapper. It's mind-blowing to witness his seamless transition between these two contrasting personas. I still enjoy watching his music videos these days. "Daechwita," released in 2020, is a masterpiece in terms of both music and visuals. And have you seen his latest appearance in "Haegeum," the title track of the album "D-Day" released in 2023? His acting skills are no joke! The music, the acting, the video editing – it's all on point. As a member of BTS, he brings his desires and emotions to life through his intense gaze and compelling lyrics as AgustD. It's fascinating, and I can't get enough of it! Just recently, I worked on adding Korean subtitles to his 2016 song "Agust D" and used the lyrics to create a valuable Korean learning tool. Of course, all of this was done legally. It's amazing how his sharp rapping skills address issues that resonate with other rappers. “I catch people who copy things that are copied, and whoever gets rid of them, whether they are juniors or seniors.” His courage to reveal one’s inner self without hesitation, cool!

He is growing

Let's talk about Suga's growth as an artist. He embarked on his musical journey at the young age of 13 (according to Korean age), and now, at 30, he has become a global superstar. Despite his immense success, he's still young and bound to face worries and challenges. Yet, whenever I see him in the media, he exudes confidence and a relaxed demeanor. It's incredible how he appeared on an American TV show all by himself, conducting the entire interview in Korean without any hint of nervousness. I find it so interesting to listen to him share his thoughts on-air. He once said, "I am afraid of falling, but I am not afraid of coming down slowly." He's planning to continue his journey as a producer. It's important to remember that artists, just like us, are flawed, uncertain, and human. I respect them for their amazing talents, as well as their growth. They're still on their journey of self-discovery, and by encouraging and comforting them, we're also supporting ourselves as their devoted fans. Recently, BTS held their 10th anniversary FESTA, hosted by RM, and Suga wrapped up the 'SUGA Agust D TOUR D DAY.' It's clear to me that he's making steady progress, both as an individual member of BTS and as a solo artist.

Beyond his story

I'm neither an ARMY nor a professional music analyst. But you know what? It's truly fascinating to witness the growth of singers and their journey as they share it with their fans. Let me share a little story with you. When Suga was still a trainee, he had this project called '1DAY 1VERSE.' Every single day, he would write a full song to sharpen his skills. He continues to work on writing songs, steadily reaching an impressive milestone of 200 songs per year. Wow! It's mind-blowing dedication and talent. As I continue my own creative journey, it makes me reflect on the importance of documenting my own story and experiences. What about you? I also support you as you embark on making your own history today!
